"Kidonia" is the second half of the fifth episode in the seventeenth season of Arthur. It is also the second half the 200th episode overall.

Summary[]

Tired of doing chores, Arthur and his friends agree to invent their own country: Kidonia. But when there are no rules, no laws, and no chores, someone is bound to ruffle a few feathers. Will this kid-ruled utopia flourish or descend into anarchy?

Plot[]

Arthur says that it would be great to have your own country where you can eat whatever you want and play whenever you want. By the time he jumps on his luxurious bed, one guard says it is time for his speech. When Arthur arrives, people are shouting, "ARTHUR! ARTHUR!" But then it turns out to be a tape recorder, and another guard turns it off. Arthur concludes the opening by asking, "Is it really a country if you're the only citizen?"

Kidonia

Arthur tells his father that he will be at the park, but David says that he has to help with the garden work. Once it is done, his mom comes out and tells Arthur he has to clean his room. Once he is done with that, D.W. mentions he has to help build the Fairy Mary Moo Cow Cookie Castle she got, much to Arthur's dismay.

Later at the park, Arthur, Francine, Brain, and Buster tell each other about their mornings. Buster complains about all the chores their parents make them do, and Arthur says it feels like some parents do not want their kids to have fun. He adds that if he had a country, giving kids chores would be against the law. Francine says you can not just make your own country, but Brain says that you can, and that there are many tiny countries around the world. Arthur stands on the pitcher's mound and says that the four of them are now citizens of Kidonia. They then make hats, a flag, a country border (around the tree of their tree house), passports, a national anthem, and a hand gesture when they sing the national anthem. Up at the tree house, now known as Kidonia, they decide to make a constitution. Arthur then writes on the constitution, "No Chores, No Laws, No Rules." The four agree on this. Buster thinks he will put his socks on his ears.

At Arthur's house, David asks if he will help clear the table. But Arthur says that he is a Kidonian citizen and that he can not. But Jane says that if he does not help, no dessert! Arthur reluctantly does so. D.W. then says she made up her own country where it is forbidden to eat broccoli, but it backfires.

Later that night, Arthur and Buster talk about their backfires and that Kidonia was much better. They then say that they should have a sleepover at Kidonia, with snacks, games, and more. When buying snacks, Buster realizes that the Kidonian money does not work, and scolds Brain for this. Francine gives Buster air fresheners for his ears, but he scolds her too, saying you could do whatever you want there before leaving Brain's ice cream shop.

When Arthur leaves for Kidonia for the night, he imagines everyone is singing their national anthem before staying up all night, because they can. Back in the present, Francine tells Arthur she is going back to her REAL home because the country smells, with Buster saying she is just jealous. Francine forfeits her citizenship and ability to return. In the tree house, the only snack they have is a pretzel. They try to split it, but it turns into four pieces. Buster says the person who guesses what he is thinking of right now, will get the pretzel. Arthur gets it right, much to Brain's dismay. He too forfeits his citizenship. Arthur then states that having their own country was not such a good idea. Buster then asks where else can you not get scolded by someone just by spilling apple juice, and Arthur notices that is why there are ants. The two have a fight on the constitution when Arthur asks why he Buster did not clean it up. He then writes that all spills must be cleaned, and Buster says that Kidonia is now like all the other places. He says that he forfeits his citizenship and moves to his own country. Arthur then declares that Kidonia is no more.

Arriving at home, he asks Jane if he can stay. She tells him that he can stay as long as he likes or at least until he is 30 years old. She makes clear with him that he will have to follow rules and do chores while living at home; he accepts, but then Jane says that because D.W. could not have her own country, she can be head of security for the Read house.

D.W. arrives and says she will need to look at everything in Arthur's backpack and have it be X-rayed, Y-rayed and Q-rayed. She then leaves the room, saying the process would take a very long time — with Arthur just following behind her.

Cultural references[]

  • Kidonia is a pun on Kydonia, an ancient city-state on the northwest coast of the island of Crete.
    • In the Arabic Language, the word 'دنية' or 'duun-ya' means world. So the name Kidonia could actually mean 'World of Kids'.
    • They probably named this country Kidonia because they are kids and Kidonia is a land where kids are free.
  • The Latin on the flag of Kidonia reads "Ludus, ludus, ludus," which translates to "Game, game, game."
    • Also, the money reads "Pecunia non omnis," which translates to "Not all the money."
  • Brain mentions Principality of Sealand as an example of a micronation.
  • This episode is similar to Animal Farm by George Orwell. Both plots revolve around a group rebelling against their superiors, and creating a new, idealistic society that quickly collapses.
