"My Music Rules" is the first half of the tenth episode in the fourth season of Arthur.
Yo-Yo Ma makes a special appearance as himself. Joshua Redman also appears as Francine's Uncle Josh.
Summary[]
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and saxophonist Joshua Redman duke it out in a classical-vs.-jazz battle at the Elwood City Library.[1]
Plot[]
In the introduction, Ms. Turner tells the preschoolers that a musical clown cancelled his concert for activity day, so the library is looking for a musician. D.W. has an idea, which prompts Arthur to give examples of knowing something is bad before it happens. One example is Grandma Thora’s cooking; another is Pal hiding because he knows he is about to get shots. D.W.'s idea is inviting “the guy who wrote Crazy Bus”, causing Arthur to groan.
My Music Rules
Mrs. Read asks Thora to babysit D.W., and Thora and Mrs. McGrady end up taking D.W. to a concert by classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma. D.W. expects it to be bad, but instead she loves the music so much that she invites Yo-Yo Ma to the concert at the library.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Francine search for another musician to prevent having the Crazy Bus composer show up. Mr. Frensky suggests Joshua Redman, a jazz musician who is related to the Frenskys. Mr. Frensky says that Redman "can play anything", and Arthur and Francine imagine Redman making music on a saxophone and a vacuum cleaner. Redman accepts the invitation, and Arthur and Francine are delighted.
Arthur and Francine go to tell Ms. Turner, but they arrive after D.W. and Thora. D.W. and Arthur have a quarrel to the sound of cello and saxophone. They continue quarreling outside the library. Arthur says that classical music is boring, but Thora says that both musicians should come.
The kids argue about the concert at school. Sue Ellen is in favor of having both musicians and Buster keeps flipflopping. Binky hopes that the two musicians will have a fight. Arthur imagines a wrestling match in which Ma almost bores Redman to death with cello music, but Redman ultimately defeats Ma by playing a bicycle pump.
At the concert, Joshua Redman is on first. Arthur asks him about classical music and is surprised to hear that Redman likes it. D.W. is likewise surprised when Yo-Yo Ma arrives and tells them that he likes Redman's music and that there is no reason to like just one kind of music. Redman agrees that the only rules in music are based on what people like to hear. D.W. begins to doubt Ma's taste, but then Ma and Redman play Crazy Bus together. All the kids sing along and Arthur admits that Ma and Redman make even that song sound like music.

Trivia[]
- At the end of the 2000 rerun intro on PBS Kids before this episode, Arthur’s crashing sound changes to pots and pans. This is the final episode to feature this sound as well as the last episode to feature an alternate sound effect for Arthur crashing.
- For Season 5, the crash was updated where the boing is missing and stayed that way for the rest of the series on all network airings, except Kids are from Earth, Parents are from Pluto, The Lousy Week, and The Last of Mary Moo Cow.
- During the credits from the finale of Season 4, some of the series intro was replaced with a piece of "Crazy Bus" played by Redman. This only happens on PBS Kids airings.
- There is yet another instance of Grandma Thora being a bad cook.
- This is the last episode in which Emily wears a pink dress and a ribbon in her hair. Starting from Season 6, she wears a blue dress and her hair down.
- This is the only episode to use unique animation for the guest star credits; later episodes featuring guest stars use clips from earlier in the episode.
- This episode was originally set to premiere Season 4, but it ended being part of Season 4's finale for unknown reasons. Meaning this episode was originally going to air on October 4, 1999
Cultural references[]
- Cello Suite No. 1 by Bach and Minuet in G Major are heard. (The latter piece, while commonly attributed to Bach, was actually written by Christian Petzold).
Errors[]
- When Yo-Yo Ma tells Joshua Redman that he picked up the sheet for Crazy Bus, he had the paper, but after D.W. finds out that Ma's music isn't so bad after all, as Ma begins the song, the sheet disappears.
- During Francine and Arthur's imagination flashback of Joshua Redman, Muffy is seen with everyone watching him play, but when he continues and everyone is cheering for him, Muffy is suddenly gone.
